Can You Open a Bank Account Online?

Owing to the fact that most people lead such busy lives these days, it makes sense that they would want to try and get as many things done online as possible – including opening bank accounts. As a result, many banks have stepped up and have made it possible for their new and existing customers to open various types of bank accounts online.

Requirements to Open a Bank Account

Before you will be allowed to open a bank account, you will need to ensure that you have the required documentation readily available. Two of the most important requirements to open a bank account will be your Social Security Number and at least one form of photo identification. Acceptable forms of photo ID include student or military ID card, driver’s licenses and any other official form of identification that displays a clear photo of the applicant.

Opening your Account Online

After deciding which bank you would like to open an account with, you will need to choose which of their account options are going to be the most suitable for you. For example, if you have chosen to work with US Bank, you will be able to choose from a Silver, Gold or Platinum Checking account option.

After selecting an account option, you will need to provide all of the information that is requested at the time. Failure to do so will result in you not being able to activate your account until such time as you do. It is important to keep in mind that there may be cases where you will still have to appear at the bank in person to verify some of your information. However, the bank will inform you if this is going to be required or not.

An Opening Deposit May be Required

Many people think that if they are opening a bank account online, they will not be required to have any form of opening balance. However, this is not the case, as most banks require some form of opening deposit on all of the account types that they offer. On average, you can expect your opening deposit to be anywhere from $25 to $100.

Keeping your Money Safe

Once you have successfully opened your bank account online, it is essential to put measures in place that will keep your account and funds as safe as possible. This will involve not sharing your login and account information with any unauthorized parties and not using public internet connections when any type of banking has to be done. If you have a card that is used to withdraw cash from an ATM, you should also not share your PIN number with anyone.

After opening your chosen bank account online, you will be able to perform several different types of transactions without even having to leave your home. This will enable you to save a lot of time by not having to drive to the bank and stand in endlessly long queues unnecessarily.
